(Photo by Brian Major) Already the operator of a signature resort in the Dominican Republic’s Punta Cana district, Hard Rock International officials announced Tuesday the company is partnering with the All Inclusive Collection to open the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Santo Domingo, a 400-room resort in the historic Dominican Republic capital. Scheduled to open in late 2017, the property will be located in Santo Domingo’s cosmopolitan downtown district and feature a 23,000-square-foot casino, a film screening room, and a nightclub that opens onto the resort’s main pool. The resort’s casino will offer guests two bars, a race and sports book, 400 slot machines and 40 table games. A private gaming room on the exclusive suite floor will also be available to guests with select access. The property will also feature 33,000 square feet of meeting space, a Rock Star suite and an entire floor of Rock Royalty level accommodations.   In addition, the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Santo Domingo will feature branded amenities including a Rock Spa and a Body Rock health and fitness center. The property’s main pool will include a bar and grill and private cabanas; premium resort facilities will also include a cigar lounge and a celebrity-chef specialty restaurant. Hotel guests will enjoy convenient access to Santo Domingo’s newest upscale shopping center, the Blue Mall. “The Dominican Republic is the region’s most visited country and continues to be the top performing destination in the Caribbean,” said Nelson Parker, vice president of casino development, Hard Rock International.  “The decision to bring a full service hotel and the brand’s second Caribbean casino to the Dominican Republic is a testament to the country’s remarkable strength in tourism.” Hard Rock International’s existing Dominican Republic property, the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana, has emerged as one of the country’s most popular resorts. Unlike the existing Punta Cana resort, the new Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Santo Domingo will not be an all-inclusive property.   “We’ve had overwhelming success with our resort in Punta Cana, and are thrilled to continue our collaboration with Hard Rock International and introduce Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Santo Domingo,” said Frank Maduro, vice president of marketing for All Inclusive Collection. The new resort will add another hotel brand familiar to American travelers to historic Santo Domingo, a UNESCO world heritage site whose Colonial Zone is undergoing extensive renovations as part of a government program to expand tourism success beyond the Punta Cana district. A new highway between Punta Cana and Santo Domingo has reduced travel time between the two cities from four hours to two, enabling resort guests to visit both areas within the same visit. The Dominican Republic hosted 5.14 million visitors in 2014, number one among countries tracked by the Caribbean Tourism Organization. 5 Tips to Avoid Costly International Cellular Charges

January 13, 2016
5 Tips to Avoid Costly International Cellular Charges With travelers relying more on their cellphones, travel agents should know how to advise clients on international cell service. Related Content Traveling abroad can provide once-in-a-lifetime, bucket-list-worthy experiences, so most people are willing to endure long flights and navigate ever-changing airline and TSA policies in order to see new and exciting places. But, there are three words that strike fear in the hearts of even the most experienced world travelers: international cellular charges. For some travelers, the only way they’re certain that they won’t be hit with international cellular charges is to switch phones to airplane mode and pretend they are iPods and/or cameras. However, for those clients who want to be able to call, text or go online while traveling abroad, here are a few tips that will help them stay connected without discovering  some expensive surprises upon returning home. Do You Plan On Texting? Texting has become the go-to form of communication for many people, and while some international cell plans include texting, others do not. For example, Verizon’s International Travel Preferred Pricing plan carries a charge of 50 cents per text sent and 5 cents per text received, which — as anyone with a teenager knows — can add up very quickly. And while AT&T’s Passport plans include unlimited text messages, iMessages or other cellular-based messaging are not included. This may leave clients vulnerable to expensive cellular data overage charges if they forget to set their smartphones to text messaging only. Just Say No to Cellular Data, Especially Location Services All international travelers need to know how and when their phone uses cellular data. The fastest way to rack up unwanted international overage charges is to have apps and other features using cellular data unnecessarily, but most people don’t realize that certain apps are constantly running even when they’re not in use. For example, while all of those location services are handy at home, they will eat through international cellular packages faster than their teenagers can text. Agents should recommend that clients traveling abroad disable (or even remove) any apps or features that are continuously using cellular data. More Devices = More Charges Agents should also remind clients that international cellular plans are charged per device, so if people traveling together don’t need to contact each other by phone while abroad, it may only be necessary to add an international plan to one phone in the group. Plus, purchasing the plan with the most international data for one device may turn out to be less expensive than putting the lowest plan on every device. Last but not least, the lower the amount of data purchased, the higher the likelihood of inadvertently incurring overage fees. Check Cell Service Options Prior to Cruising International cellular plans generally apply to travel on land only, so agents should advise cruise clients that different rates will most likely apply on ships. For example, some larger cruise lines (such as Carnival Cruise Lines) offer cell

7 Things a Travel Agent Wants You to Know – Cruise Radio

January 6, 2016
7 7 Things a Travel Agent Wants You to Know There are quite a few ways to book a cruise vacation. You can book directly through the cruise line, you can book through a third party website like Expedia, or you can book through a travel agent. A travel agent doesn’t charge for booking your cruise. They earn a commission by the cruise line. Here are seven things you should know about your travel agent. 1. Respect his time If you call a travel agent, be kind enough to give him your business. Most likely, your travel agent has sailed on the ship you are considering going on, and if not that specific ship, most likely the cruise line. A travel agent will spend a large amount of time trying to identify what cruise is best for you, so respect his time and knowledge. 2. Don’t expect miracles Your travel agent can do lots of things to make your vacation great, but don’t expect miracles! If you choose to book at the last minute to save a few bucks, don’t expect your travel agent to get you the “perfect cabin”. You know the one, not too close to the elevator but not too far away from the main dining room! Trust me. The so called “perfect cabin” was sold a year ago! Your travel agent will do everything he can so he earns your repeat business (and word of mouth referrals), but he isn’t a superhero! 3) Share your expectations and needs Tell your travel agent all the “variables” up front. Do you want early dining? Do you want to take shore excursions? Is the ship “family friendly?” Do you want a true double cabin, or are you okay with a pull down bed in your cabin? Your travel agent needs to know all the details upfront so that he can craft a great cruise vacation for you. 4) Need a room? Ask for recommendations from your travel agent about pre- and post-cruise lodging and things to do in port before and after your cruise. If you are flying to your cruise, be sure to fly in the day before! If you fly in the day of, lots of things can go wrong. Your travel agent will let you know the best hotel for your pre-cruise stay and what attractions are in the area. 5) Travel insurance – don’t leave home without it Unforeseen problems happen all the time! Someone in the family gets sick at the last minute. Your luggage is lost. You misplace your passport. Your plane arrives late and you miss the cruise. You name it, anything can and will happen. Travel insurance costs pennies on the dollar and it gives you peace of mind. Ask your travel agent which travel insurance is best for your vacation. 6) Super Secret Tips Your travel agent will have lots of tips that those online travel websites won’t tell you. When is the best time to board? Can I bring bottled water? What is the tipping policy?
